You have a timeline to finish. First, you need to collect footage you are allowed to use, grab an audio reference, check which resolution is available, and put everything in the right folder. None of that is the creative part of editing, but it can interrupt the creative part before it even starts.
That is why I made ZDM — Zeekay Download Manager: a Windows app that gives supported video and audio downloads a dedicated place in your workflow. It brings together a browser video picker, useful output formats, and an organized queue.
ZDM 1.2.3 is my free gift to the video editing community. No paid activation key. Just a tool from my editing desk to yours.
The official ZDM page has the download, specifications, browser setup and troubleshooting steps.

ZDM is a free Windows download manager built around the needs of video editors and creators. It is useful when you are gathering your own uploads, licensed source material, permitted reference media, or audio for a project and want a more controlled process than a collection of browser tabs.
The desktop app manages the queue and media processing. Its Chrome or Edge companion adds a small ZDM badge near supported videos. Click it to see the video and audio choices that the source actually provides.
It is a standalone Windows app, so you do not need to install a Premiere Pro plugin to use it. You can keep editing in your preferred application while ZDM handles the downloads separately.
Get a useful format before you reach the timeline
Resolution is only one part of a usable media file. Container and codec choices matter too. ZDM’s Editing preset targets H.264 video and AAC audio in MP4, with yuv420p video output. Compatible tracks can be copied, while sources that need conversion are processed with FFmpeg.
There are four main output choices:
- Editing: H.264/AAC MP4 for a widely supported editing format.
- Original: keep the source format when you prefer to handle conversion yourself.
- AAC/M4A: compressed audio when a smaller audio file fits the job.
- WAV: 48 kHz, 24-bit PCM audio for editing and audio workflows.
Choose the preset that suits the project. A WAV export does not recover detail missing from a compressed source, and a higher output resolution cannot create quality the source never supplied. ZDM shows source-dependent choices rather than promising every resolution for every video.
A browser button that stays close to the video
The companion extension is there to reduce the distance between watching a source and adding it to your queue. On supported video pages, the gold ZDM badge opens a format picker with separate video and audio options.
The status dot tells you what is happening: orange while formats are being analyzed, green when choices are ready, and red if analysis fails. On YouTube, changing videos triggers analysis of the newly selected source.
The extension connects to the app on your own PC. Keep the desktop app running and load the paired extension folder generated by your installation. The ZDM installation guide walks through the Chrome and Edge steps.
Let the queue do the repetitive work
For a single source, paste its link into Add URL. For a larger collection, Batch lets you analyze and review up to 50 links before adding them. You can move waiting jobs up the queue, select multiple entries, retry failed jobs, and pause transfers where the source supports resuming.
Custom filenames and destination folders help keep collected media close to the project it belongs to. Favorite folders save repeated browsing. Global and per-download speed limits give you another way to manage a download session; the global limit is conservatively shared across configured concurrent slots.
You can also schedule the queue to start later while ZDM is running. It is not a PC wake-up feature—the app needs to be open, including in the tray, for a scheduled start.
Keep the progress window out of the edit
A download window should tell you what is happening without taking over your screen. ZDM offers wide and narrow progress views. Choose the one you prefer once, and future popups use that choice until you change it.
Window positions, sizes and library preferences are remembered. Use cards or a compact list, choose a category, or keep the sidebar collapsed. If you prefer the app ready at sign-in, enable Start with Windows to launch it hidden in the system tray.
Those details are small, but they make a tool feel more at home alongside an editing session.
Start with a simple five-step workflow
- Install ZDM 1.2.3 using the download on its official app page.
- Open Browser integration in ZDM and load the generated extension folder in Chrome or Edge.
- Open a supported source that you own or have permission to download and use.
- Choose video or audio, an available format, a destination, and a filename if needed.
- Let the job finish, then open the saved file or reveal it in its folder.
You do not need a paid license key. The connection step is simply the extension pairing with the Windows app. Required runtimes and the exact folder path are covered on the setup page.
What ZDM does—and what depends on the source
ZDM uses a native engine for direct files, an on-demand yt-dlp adapter for supported website and adaptive downloads, and FFmpeg/FFprobe for media processing and checks. It supports sources such as YouTube and other supported website videos, but site behavior can change and some sources restrict downloads.
This release does not offer universal website coverage, DRM bypass or automatic browser-cookie transfer. The Editing preset is built for useful output formats; it is not an Adobe-certified integration. Always collect and use media with the necessary rights and permissions.
A little less friction, a little more room to create
ZDM is one more part of what I want to build through ZeeKay Editz: useful tools that support the work around the edit, not just the finished result. If it helps you organize a session, collect a source more comfortably, or spend less time repeating the same steps, it is doing the job I made it for.
It is free to try. Take it into your next project and make it fit the way you work.
